Site Activity Summary

Site status:

The Havieron Underground Mine Project (Havieron Project) is a greenfield gold-copper deposit located approximately 45 km east of the Telfer, originally commenced in 2020 as a joint venture between Newcrest Operations Ltd and Greatland Pty Ltd.

 

In November 2023, Newmont purchased Newcrest Mining Ltd and in so doing acquired Newcrest Operations. Newmont holds a 70% interest in the Havieron JV arrangement with 30% held by Greatland. Greatland announced on 10 September 2024 that it had entered into a binding agreement with Newmont to acquire, subject to certain conditions being satisfied, Newmont’s 70% ownership interest in the Havieron gold-copper project, 100% ownership of the Telfer gold-copper mine, and other related assets in the Paterson region.

 

The development of the Havieron Project to date has involved exploration and early works (Stage 1) activities. Stage 1 commenced in December 2020 with more exploration work completed during the 2022 and 2023 reporting periods. A description of mining activities for this reporting period (1 October 2023-30 September 2024) includes:

 

Tenement L 45/582 and L 45/636

  • Roadworks to widen the Northern Access Road to a two-way road.

Tenement M 45/1287

  • Continued development of single heading decline until November 2023 where development was paused due to a revaluation of capital expenditure by Newmont Australia. Development has been paused for the remainder of the reporting period.
  • Commissioning of two sediment ponds adjacent to Evaporation Pond 1 with 6-inch pump lines leading to two silt busters.
  • Temporary turkey’s nest decommissioned and demolished.
  • Temporary V-drain installed on eastern side of Evaporation Pond 1 to allow for better storm water management. This is a temporary fixture until a more permanent solution is provided by Worley consulting based on water modelling

Exploration:

Exploration activities at the Havieron Project are managed in accordance with the Department of Energy, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) Programme of Works (PoW) conditions and established Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and procedures applicable to the Havieron Project. The Newmont Exploration EMP is in place to manage specific processes and environmental impacts from exploration activities.

No new exploration activities have occurred during this reporting period.

 

Mining Activities:

Work conducted during the reporting period included the following:

  • Continuation of a single heading decline, this was put on hold in November 2023 due to approval restrictions and the sale of the mine.
  • Commissioning of two sediment ponds adjacent to Evaporation Pond 1 with 6-inch pump lines leading to two silt busters
  • Temporary V-drain inserted on eastern side of evaporation pond 1 to allow for better storm water managament

 

Rehabilitation

A progressive rehabilitation strategy has been implemented for exploration activities. However, no project or exploration rehabilitation took place during this reporting period. No rehabilitation trials have progressed during the reporting period as landforms at the rehabilitation stage were not available. The next opportunity to undertake rehabilitation trials will require the completion of Stage 1 mining.

 

Progress towards Mine Closure

The stage 1 Mine Closure Plan has been approved for the Project. A revised Mining Proposal for Stage 1 (Rev 4) has also been approved and it includes closure plans for this stage. An outline of the MCP inclusion and objectives has been submitted to the EPA as part of the referral for Stage 2 and may be subject to public comments during the advertising period.

 

Summary of future works over the next 12 months

During the next reporting period (2024/2025), Newmont / Greatland will continue with exploration and mining activities as follows: Tenement M 45/1287

• Construction and operation of additional Evaporation Ponds 4 – 6. Work is scheduled for February 2025 commencement conditional upon Primary and Secondary Approvals under the EP Act (1986), the EPBC Act (1999), the Mining Act (1978) and the Rights in Water and Irrigation Act (1914). A nominal 3-month construction phase is proposed. The construction also includes:

  • Pipeline and associated infrastructure
  • Additional monitoring bore installation 
  • Additional clearing and construction for topsoil management

• Recommencement of aquifer depressurisation and mine development to 420mRL (completion of works under Mining Proposal Stage 1 Reg ID 121684). Recommencement dependent upon completion and commissioning of Ponds 4 – 6, nominally June 2025

• Additional monitoring bore installation

• Commence capping on WRL 1. At the completion of Stage 1 mining, pending approvals, the Havieron project will move to Stage 2 which may include the following within the next 12 months:

• Development of Infrastructure corridor between Telfer and Havieron consolidating the existing access road with power and water infrastructure.

Data Verification Method

In the 2023/2024 reporting period, the disturbance data was digitised from aerial imagery and reported as part of the Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF). The activity data was verified with 10 centimetres (cm) resolution RGB (red-green-blue) and NIR (Near-Infrared) imagery as well as 10 cm Digital Terrain Model (DTM), Digital Surface Model (DSM) (if required) and 0.5 m contours. Forming part of the continual improvement cycle, the disturbance data is reviewed on a regular basis to increase precision and accuracy. As part of the review process, there may be some instances of variation within the reported disturbance.
