  • The status of the site
  • exploration activities
  • operational mining activities
  • rehabilitation activities
  • progress towards mine closure (e.g. research / trials undertaken, progress with closure plan)
  • progress against the care and maintenance plan (if applicable*)

Attach supporting information in the Attach Documents section.

*   Sites on care and maintenance require a care and maintenance plan. For more information, refer to section 88 of the Mine Safety and Inspection Act 1994 and the worksheet

Site Activity Summary

Site Status:

The Havieron Project (the Project) is a greenfield gold-copper deposit operated by Newcrest under a farm-in agreement with Greatland. The Project is located within the boundaries of the East Pilbara Shire in the Paterson Province, Western Australia, and is located approximately 45 kilometres (km) east of Newcrest’s Telfer Mine.

Stage 2 of the Havieron Project is currently in the Feasibility Stage with approval expected late 2023. The Stage 2 Mining Proposal amendment is expected to be submitted in early 2023 to allow concurrent assessment whilst the EPA assessment occurs. Stage 2 covers the underground mine development (below 400mbgl), an infrastructure corridor to Telfer and additional infrastructure (waste rock landform, evaporation ponds, paste plant, etc). Amendments to Telfer’s Mining Proposals are expected to allow processing of Havieron ore, deposition of tailings in addition to use of Telfer waste rock and tailings.

Description of Havieron Mining activities in the reporting period (1 Oct 2021 – 31 Aug 2022).

  • Continuation of single heading decline.
  • Commence excavation of surface vertical return airway shaft.
  • Completion of temporary raw water storage facility (Turkey’s Nest).
  • Commence construction of Hypersaline Cell 2 and waste rock dump containment bund.

Exploration:

Exploration activities at the Havieron Project are managed in accordance with DMIRS Programme of Works (PoW) conditions and established Environmental Management Plans and procedures applicable to the Havieron Project. Newcrest Exploration’s Environmental Management Plan is in place to manage specific processes and environmental impacts from exploration activities.

Newcrest commenced exploration drilling at the Havieron Project in May 2019 and has progressively increased its exploration activities at the project. During the reporting period substantial mineral exploration programs were conducted at the Havieron Project. Exploration drilling programmes have focused on defining the system extents of the Havieron system, infill drilling to support Inferred and Indicated Mineral Resource estimates and step out drilling to define the extent and growth potential of the Havieron resource. In addition, Newcrest commenced exploration drilling outboard of the Havieron deposit, testing Havieron-like geophysical targets within the Havieron Mining Lease.

Eighty (80) drill holes totalling approximately 54,900m were completed or in progress for minerals exploration during the reporting period within Mining Lease 45/1287, with up to eight (8) drill rigs operational at any one time. Exploration drilling was undertaken from thirty-six (36) separate drill sites with fifty-five (55) daughter holes drilled from established drill holes. Exploration drilling comprised mud-rotary pre collars through the Permian Paterson Formation cover sequence with diamond drilling advanced from the base of the cover sequence using PQ3, HQ3 and NQ2 diameter coring configuration. Exploration drilling within M 45/1287 during the reporting period has been executed under PoW Registration ID’s 89885, 97596 and 98338.

In addition to ongoing minerals exploration drilling at the Havieron Project, exploration activities conducted within M 45/1287 during the reporting period have comprised:

  • Downhole electromagnetic (DHEM) geophysical surveying to aid detection of massive sulphide lodes, higher-grade sulphide bearing quartz-sulphide vein networks, and to test the growth potential of the Havieron deposit to the south, the eastern breccia and the northern crescent. Due to the complexity of deep directional drilling required around the Havieron resource, DHEM represents an opportunity to de-risk targeting in new areas of the mineral system.
  • Orientation Airborne Mobile MagnetoTelluric (MobileMT) geophysical surveying over the known Havieron mineralisation, which underlies complex conductive cover that has limited the effectiveness of controlled sources airborne EM systems in imaging basement (e.g., SkyTEM). The orientation survey was designed to provide Newcrest low-cost exposure to the technology and understand the response of the Havieron system in MobileMT measurements, calibrated against geologic data, which will be utilised in planning (de-risking) future MobileMT exploration surveys. Three (3) east-west flight lines for approximately 20 line-km were surveyed.
  • A ground based MagnetoTelluric (MT) geophysical survey to assess the ability of the MT method to identify the Havieron deposit as a large conductive body, and to expand testing to the Havieron camp scale in search of large conductive bodies, which may be indicative of additional mineralisation within the Havieron Mining Lease. The 400m x 400m gridded survey will cover the entire Havieron Mining Lease, avoiding sand dunes and potential cultural heritage sites. The survey is in progress.
  • Exploration have also supported environmental, hydrogeological, and geotechnical drilling activities at the Havieron Project.

A progressive rehabilitation strategy has been implemented for exploration activity at the Havieron Project and exploration rehabilitation activities were undertaken during the reporting period.

Mining activities:

Work conducted during the reporting period included the following:

  • Continuation of single heading decline.
  • Commence excavation of surface vertical return airway shaft.
  • Completion of temporary raw water storage facility (Turkey’s Nest).
  • Commence construction of Hypersaline Cell 2 and waste rock dump containment bund.

Rehabilitation:

A progressive rehabilitation strategy has been implemented for exploration activities at the Havieron Project and exploration rehabilitation activities were undertaken during the reporting period.

Progress towards Mine Closure:

No rehabilitation or trials have progressed during the reporting period as landforms at the rehabilitation stage were not available. The next opportunity to undertake rehabilitation or trials will require the completion of STG1.

Step 3.3 Environmental Group Site - Site Plan
Guidance

A Site Plan must be attached that clearly and accurately reflects the information provided in this AER. The minimum requirements for the Site Plan are:

  • All operations and areas disturbed should be drawn on the plan with the scale and legend clearly shown
  • All tenements and their boundaries indicated
  • Include topographical, mine-site infrastructure details and cadastral information
  • Include areas rehabilitated to date with year completed and rehabilitation stage
  • Show areas disturbed during the reporting period
  • Show areas proposed for disturbance during the following reporting period

The Site plan will be publically available via the department's website. Please attach both a public and full version of the site plan if your main document contains confidential information.

Guidance

All mining related disturbance and rehabilitation activity present at the end of the AER reporting period needs to be reported.

Enter a summary of how the area data was verified (e.g. orthophotography, surveying), click the Save Form button, then review and update the activities, disturbance and rehabilitation data for each tenement.

Data Verification Method

In June 2022, the disturbance data was digitised from aerial imagery and reported as part of the Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF).

The data has since been updated with recent survey pickup data and internal Surface Disturbance Permit (SDP) records to create an up-to-date disturbance dataset (current as of September 2022). Forming part of the continual improvement cycle, the disturbance data is reviewed on a regular basis to increase precision and accuracy. As part of the review process, there may be some instances of variation within the reported disturbance

The total approved footprint for L45/582 and M45/1287 (from REG ID 89453) is 203.38 ha of which 151.37 ha has been disturbed (inclusive of a small amount of exploration not yet rehabilitated approved under PoWs).
